Sunday dance jam

A jam is a place to practise contact improvisation (CI). OKI arranges dance jams every Sunday 17-19 at Rom for Dans. Address: Marstrandsgata 8, entrance from Stockholmsgata. See map. Fee: 80 kr.

In musical terms a jam session is a musical act where musicians play by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. In dance jams we improvise and create movements in contact with other dancers. You do not need any former experience of CI to attend a contact jam. The contact form attracts people from various backgrounds and different ages and is open to everyone. Jams takes normally place in a dance studio, but can also be arranged as outdoor and water jams.

Basic RGBIn Oslo the jams start with an introduction circle and a led warm-up before the open jam, and end with a closing circle. The intro and closing circle is led by the person responsible for the jam, he or she is also responsible for receiving the payment for the jam at the end. The warm-up is led by an experienced contact dancer and is based on the principles of CI. There will be different persons in charge of the warm-up every Sunday, all experienced contact dancers. In the warm-up we aim to provide tools in contact techniques for beginners, as well as challenging tasks for experienced dancers.

During the part with the open jam nobody is leading. You can improvise alone, with another person or with several others. You are free to have a break from the dancing and sit down at the side whenever you want. The open jam is a shared and focused space whether you observe or dance. There might be live or recorded music or there might be silence. If you would like to play or happen to know someone that does, please contact us. Also let us know if you are an experienced CI-dancer and would like to lead a warm up.
